A forest like no other

Tucked away in the eastern edge of India, the Sundarbans is a land where rivers dance through tangled roots, mud whispers ancient stories, and the mighty Royal Bengal Tiger prowls unseen. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the world’s largest mangrove forest, stretching across sprawling deltas formed by the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers.

But the Sundarbans is not just a place you see — it’s a place that reaches out and finds you. Its calm waterways, lush green canopies, sudden flashes of wildlife, and local stories sink quietly into your heart. With Sundarban Eco Trails, you get to explore this magical land in a way that’s safe, deeply authentic, and beautifully slow.

Day 1: Arrival, river rhythms & flavors of Bengal

A warm welcome

Your journey begins with a friendly pickup from Canning. The real adventure starts when you step onto our comfortable boat — your floating home for the next three days. A refreshing welcome drink greets you as the boat sets off, carving gentle ripples into the muddy Sundarban waters.

As you lean against the railing, watch the horizon fill with fishing nets, small wooden boats, and green corridors of mangrove trees. The slow pace of the river instantly soothes city nerves.

Exploring Hamilton’s Bungalow

Soon, you’ll arrive at Gosaba to visit the historic Hamilton’s Bungalow. This quaint house once belonged to Sir Daniel Hamilton, a Scottish philanthropist who worked tirelessly for local communities. Walk through its quiet rooms and old verandas, listening to stories that blend colonial past with local lore.

A feast on the river

By mid-morning, small snacks appear — like amudi mach fry paired with a hot cup of tea or coffee. Later, lunch is served on deck with plates of rice, dal, crispy aloo bhaja, and a highlight: ilish macher matha diye kochu saag — a gorgeous taro greens dish flavored by the hilsa fish head. You may also get sorse ilish (hilsa in mustard) or ilish bhapa (steamed hilsa). Each bite is a passport into Bengali kitchens.

The evening sun turns the river golden as you munch on chicken pakodas, tea in hand, laughter flowing with the breeze. When dinner arrives, you enjoy rice, dal, bhaja, rich mutton kosha, and perhaps chili chicken with fried rice — a lovely mix of homely and festive.

Day 2: Into the mangrove maze & wildlife that finds you

Dawn on the deck

Early next morning, a gentle call wakes you. You step onto the deck with a steaming cup of bed tea, watching mist rise from the water. Sometimes, deer stand silhouetted near the bank. Overhead, birds flit across the pale sky.

A big Bengali breakfast

The crew serves a hearty breakfast of kochuri, cholar dal, mishti, and more tea, fueling you for the day ahead.

Deep in the Sundarbans

Your boat meanders into the heart of the jungle. Today’s stops often include:

  • Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary, home to a watch tower, museum, and a place to learn how forest guards protect this fragile world.
  • Sudhanyakhali, another tower that offers panoramic views over muddy clearings — ideal tiger-spotting grounds.
  • Banobibi Bharani, where local tales of Banobibi, the protector of the forest, echo through villages.
  • Do Banki, known for its canopy walk over a mangrove trail, letting you look down on roots twisting like serpents.

Lunch is again a royal affair. You might get ilish macher matha diye pui saag, bhapa ilish or ilish paturi, alongside chingri malai curry and all the trimmings. Later, veg pakoda or even a bit of chowmein may surprise you for evening snacks.

Evening calm

As the boat anchors in a quiet creek, you watch the sun dip behind silhouettes of trees. Dinner is simple but comforting — rice, dal, mixed veg, and mutton. The gentle rocking of the boat lulls you to a peaceful sleep, stars overhead twinkling through gaps in the canopy.

Day 3: Last sights & tastes before goodbye

Morning peace

Your final morning brings another round of bed tea and biscuits. By now, the river feels like a friend. Birds dive, water ripples, and the boat slowly drifts toward its last stops.

Breakfast might be chana masala with boiled egg, and by lunchtime you’re treated to a farewell feast: ilish biryani and chicken kosha, chutney and papad adding crispy notes.

What makes this journey truly special

Wildlife that finds you

Unlike a safari where jeeps chase animals, in Sundarban, the wildlife often finds you. You might spot a monitor lizard slipping into water, crocodiles basking on muddy banks, or a playful pod of Gangetic dolphins breaking the surface. Spotted deer often come to drink, and sometimes you’ll see fresh tiger paw marks on the bank — a silent promise that the king of this jungle is close by.

Food as a journey of its own

Every day’s menu is thoughtfully planned to let you experience the full range of local cooking. From fresh river fish to rich curries and simple fried veggies, each meal carries the warmth of local kitchens.

It’s not just food — it’s a story told in spices, shared on deck as the river flows by.

Warm local hospitality

Your guides, cooks, and boat crew are all from nearby villages. They know the river’s moods and the forest’s secrets. Whether helping you spot a crocodile or serving steaming luchis, their gentle pride in this land makes every small moment richer.

Perfect for groups and families

There’s room to spread out on deck, cozy beds below, and a shared rhythm that invites conversations and laughter. Whether you come with family, friends, or a group, this trip lets you slow down together, far from noise and screens.

Tips to make the most of it

  • Carry light cotton clothes, a sun cap, sunglasses, and mosquito repellent.
  • Bring a pair of flip-flops for the boat and sturdy shoes if you decide on short forest walks.
  • Keep a camera ready but also remember to sometimes just watch — some of the best memories can’t be captured.
  • Relax. The joy of the Sundarbans is in unhurried discovery.

Come, let the Sundarbans write your story

At the end of these three days, you’ll leave with more than just photos. You’ll take home the hush of mangroves at dawn, the swirl of water beneath the boat, laughter shared over fish curries, and maybe a brief meeting with wildlife that chose to show itself to you.

At Sundarban Eco Trails, we’re here to make sure your journey is comfortable, safe, and filled with little wonders that stay with you long after you’ve returned home.
